The Reconstruction Presidents
I picked up Brooks D. Simpson’s book at Grant Cottage in the Adirondacks. Brooks D. Simpson is an expert on Civil War history and authors a blog, Crossroads that discusses history, scholarship, and academia.
I have always known Eric Foner to be the preeminent historian on Reconstruction. I have a couple of his books and years ago, made it through half of one (at least I’m honest). This book offers a slightly different perspective on Reconstruction policy. Rather than view it from the third person or from those on the ground, Simpson looks at Reconstruction as Presidential and Congressional policy.
You cannot understand Reconstruction with this book alone but it does serve as a good companion piece to a Foner deeper dive.
